Proposals to develop new play provision at Bishops Field, in Creggan, Co Londonderry have been endorsed by the city council's environmental committee, as part of a wider green space regeneration plan for the area.
A funding package was also considered at the committee meeting with a view to phasing the development of the plan early next year.
This development for the green space follows on from the recent reopening of the Bishop's Field Synthetic Pitch.
Plans have been on display at Creggan Neighbourhood Partnerships offices, on Central Drive, since last Friday, offering local residents an opportunity to view the proposals before a formal Planning Application is lodged.
Chair of Derry Council's Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Gerry MacLochlainn said: "This proposed developed demonstrates council’s commitment to it's Play Plan and I am delighted to endorse this exciting initiative for continued investment in the Creggan area.
"I would urge as many people as possible to take the opportunity to view the plans so that the project can be tailored to the community's needs."
The council it has has worked closely with Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership and TRIAX to develop the greenspace into a high quality parkland facility.
Sean McMonagle, of the TRIAX Neighbourhood Management Team, said: "This is very significant news for the Creggan community. This need has been identified by residents, young people and children across the area in a survey carried out by the NMT two years ago.
"The Neighbourhood Management Team gave the commitment to make it a priority and welcomes the progress made."
