Antrim A2 Dualling Will Not Start Until 2011

Over £4.2m will be spent on road works in Antrim this year, it has been revealed.

However, on-site works at a new dualling scheme are not predicted to begin for at least another two years.

Transport Minister Conor Murphy said visibility improvement works will be progressed at several locations in the area.

These will take place at Craigstown Rd / Ballylurgan Rd, Staffordstown Rd / Blackrock Rd, Printshop Rd / Lylehill Rd, Castle Rd / Milltown Rd, Old Coach Rd / Lowtown Rd, Ballynadrentagh Rd / Blackstock Rd and Steeple Rd / Ladyhill Rd.

"It is also proposed to extend the existing footway on the Moneynick Rd, Toome from Gloverstown Rd to Drumderg Roundabout and also extend the footway on the Barnish Rd, Randalstown towards the playing fields this financial year," said Mr Murphy.

A contractor is yet to be appointed to design and construction the A6 dualling scheme between Randalstown and Castledawson, which the Minister said could begin in 2011 and be completed within two years.

Road Service's Principal Engineer, Jim Campbell, highlighted other scheme which will be progressed in the meantime.

These include traffic calming measures on the Rathenraw Estate, Antrim; widening of the footway on Old Steeple Rd, Antrim as part of an ongoing Safe Route to School project with Antrim Grammar School.
