Millionaire Helps Fund Pool Scheme

Construction News Image
Work on a Tipperary swimming pool has received a major boost after a local millionaire pledged to help fund the project.

Businessman JP McManus is to donate €300,000 towards the building of the public amenity in the small town of Roscrea.

Mr McManus was approached by local TD Michael Smith to support the project. The millionaire's contribution is expected to come in the form of a flume - an enclosed slide.

The eventual complex is set to include a five-lane 25 metre swimming pool, learner pool, children's pool, gym and circuit training area, café with seating and spectator area as well as a steam room, sauna and possibly a Jacuzzi.

Roscrea Swimming Board, which purchased the old convent school site for a nominal fee, said it hoped the facility would be opened in mid-summer.

Meanwhile, New Ross Town Council has released tender documents for the construction of a new swimming pool in the area.

Last week, Town Clerk David Minogue told councillors the local authority had received tender documentation from its consultants in respect of the construction of the new swimming pool.

"I have arranged to have this documentation assessed by an independent Quantity Surveyor to determine the likely construction costs and will revert to the Council with my recommendation for how best the project can then be progressed," said Mr Minogue.

The new pool will be located on the grounds of Good Counsel College.
