£19m Spent On Derry Airport Improvements

The demolition of houses close to City of Derry airport, and the subsequent runway extension, cost almost £19m, it has been revealed.

Other works undertaken as part of the investment included health and safety improvements.

The British and Irish governments supplied around £14m of the capital spent updating the airport.


Derry City Council provided £5m towards to the work.

Seventeen homes close to Donnybrewer were demolished as part of the scheme.

John Meehan, Deputy Town Clerk, said the council was unable to provide assurances as to whether the investment would impact on next year’s rates bills in the area.

He said: "That's an issue that the city treasurer is currently working on and there are a number of challenges both in terms of the revenue and in terms of the capital side.

"Obviously the airport would be a significant challenge on the capital front," added Mr Meehan.
