Threats against Limerick Regeneration Agency staff, based in the Moyross estate, will not lead to their withdrawal, the body's Chief Executive has insisted.
Brendan Kenny was responding to suggestions the office may relocate, after an alleged confrontation involving around 30 local residents yesterday.
During the incident the agency's staff were reportedly seriously threatened by the locals, who were said to be reacting to the city council's decision to seize a number of their horses.
Despite this, agency boss Mr Kenny remained adamant that the office would stay put, insisting he had received many calls of support from the nearby community.
Last week, the Limerick Regeneration Agency put forward proposals for a mixed-use sports centre on the estate.
Presenting plans to city councillors, Mr Kenny said the scheme would form part of a wider recreational programme.
He told the Cultural and Sporting Policy Committee the facility would include playing fields and a swimming pool.
Mr Kenny said the site had the potential to become a regional sports centre.
Plans are also afoot for a college in Southill, near Roxboro roundabout, with nearby lands earmarked for a new library.
Sporting facilities in St Mary's Park would be consolidated with the news amenities, according to Mr Kenny, creating "the potential for a smaller swimming pool".
Four rugby and GAA offices are planned, as part of the regeneration scheme, in addition to four soccer administration officers.
