The second annual Sustainable Planning Awards 2009 were launched this week at the Orchard Building, Stranmillis University College.
The Orchard Building won the first ever RTPI/RSPB NI Sustainable Planning Award in 2008.
Presentations will be made to the 2009 winners in February.
RSPB NI Conservation Officer Claire Ferry said: "The aim is to promote and reward the awareness and implementation of sustainable planning and development, from early stage design and community consultation to practical solutions including energy saving and sourcing of materials.
"Sustainable development is not simply an abstract term - these awards are about recognising the practical efforts being made by planners, developers and builders by providing a range of environmentally enhancing initiatives for the present and into the future."

Last year's winner was the Orchard Building, at Stranmillis University College, makes use of natural lighting, has a biomass boiler for heating and a sustainable urban drainage scheme, to reduce water use and pollution.
The Orchard Building faced stiff competition from the Connswater Greenway project in East Belfast and Hill House, a private dwelling in County Down.
Sponsors of the 2009 awards are Department of Social Development, Planning Service, Department of Finance and Personnel, Action Renewables, The Carvill Group and RTPI NI Branch.
Social Development Margaret Ritchie said: "My Department, which sponsors this year's award, aims to build stronger, more cohesive communities through the full range of its work.
"This award, for balancing and integrating the social, economic and environmental needs of the community, reflects my commitment to making life better for all of our people."
Cynthia Smith, Chief Executive of the Planning Service said: "We are committed to providing a planning system that encourages and delivers high quality, sustainable buildings and environments.
"We strongly believe that architects, engineers, developers, voluntary organisations, and the community are all vital components that play an important part in delivering sustainable development for Northern Ireland," added Ms Smith.
