Ritchie Launches New Phase At £24m Lisburn Housing Scheme

Northern Ireland Housing Minister Margaret Ritchie has launched the latest phase of a new social housing scheme at Windermere, Ballymacoss in Lisburn.

This £24 million development of 176 social houses by Ulidia Housing Association has been assisted by £18 million in grant aid from the Department for Social Development.

Minister Ritchie said: "The building of 176 new homes on one site is a magnificent achievement and is a significant boost for housing in Lisburn.

"My New Housing Agenda sets challenging targets for new build and major projects such as this will be a feature of future programmes."

A unique aspect of this development is a partnership with Lisburn City Council to incorporate a multi-use games area within the final housing phase.

This will be for use not just by residents, but also by the wider community.

Over 100 of the houses in the scheme, which is due to be completed in early 2010, are already occupied and during her visit, Minister Ritchie met with some of the residents.

"I am impressed by what I have seen here today. All involved, in particular the board and staff of Ulidia Housing Association, have done a tremendous job in providing first class, energy efficient housing that will sustain a new vibrant community in the local area," added Ms Ritchie.
