Tunnel Workers Abort Strike

Workers at Dublin's Port Tunnel have called off strike action, which could have brought city centre traffic to a halt.

Workers' union Siptu has said it came to an agreement with port operator Transroute.

The dispute, sparked by unfair wage claims, could have led to workers walking off the job next month.

Union members insisted they were being paid less than the average industry rate.

The union served a 14-day strike notice to management earlier this week.


Discussions, helped by the Labour Court, have averted industrial action, which would have had an impact on commuters across the capital city.

Siptu Branch Organiser Owen Reidy said: "We very much welcome the agreement which will improve pay and conditions for our members working in Transroute at the Dublin Port Tunnel and which we believe very much will bring pay into line with other tolling facilities around the country."

Operator Transroute manages and maintains the tunnel including the tollbooths, traffic management, safety, emergency and contingency plans and inspections.
