Bord Gáis, who yesterday announced plans to increase gas prices by 15%, has today reported a "milestone" profit increase in 2007.
The leading energy supplier, which is continuing to expand throughout Ireland, said profits before tax rose 29% to €166 million.
Total sales figure rose 10% to €1.2 billion during last year. Two thirds of these sales where gas, which were up 8% and accounted for €763m of revenue.
The group’s developing market, electricity supply, generated €239m worth of sales, which was up 18%.
Gas transportation accounted for 14% of total turnover and enjoyed a sales boot of 8%, generating revenues of €169m.
The group said the remaining €44m of sales was made up from ancillary activities.
Recently appointed Chief Executive John Mullins, said the company had "a milestone year".
Mr Mullins said the group had achieved significant progress in its core markets.
Yesterday the group announced they would be approaching the industry regulator to request a 15% increase in prices, due to the fluctuating global environment.
Addressing the sharp hike in gas prices, Mr Mullins said that international oil and gas prices have reached new peaks during the current financial year.
The chief executive also warned of a bleak outlook for future prices, with projections of oil barrel prices hitting €200 becoming a reality.
The group have seen significant expansion in the Northern Ireland market. Additional group development will come in the form of a new power station at Whitegate in Cork Harbour.
