Sandyford Water Scheme Gets Go-Ahead For Construction

The Department of the Environment has allowed Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council to accept the €12.4 million tender for the Civil Works Contract of the Sandyford Water Supply Scheme.

Local Fianna Fáil Senator Maria Corrigan welcomed the decision.

"During correspondence with Minister Gormley, he outlined to me that he has asked the Council to commence construction work as soon as possible. I particularly welcome the fact that the Minister has requested for the process to be carried out quickly as I have been very concerned about the delay," she said.

The scheme is being financed under the Environment Department's Water Services Investment Programme 2007-2009 at an estimated overall cost of €24.4 million.

"I understand that the scheme will address water supply deficiencies in the Sandyford, Ballyogan, Stepaside and Kilternan areas. The works will ensure that current supply problems will be rectified and the overall quality and reliability of the system will be improved to the highest standard.

"I have also been informed that two new covered reservoirs are to be constructed at Dun Gaoithe and Stepaside along with pumping stations at Stillorgan Reservoir and Sandyford Hall Estate and approximately 7.5 kilometres of rising and distribution mains," Senator Corrigan added.
