Refurbishment Of Omagh Leisure Complex Commences

Omagh District continues to invest in its recreational facilities with the first phase of redevelopment and upgrading commencing at the Leisure Complex.

The £2m project which will see improvements made to the flagship complex.

This first phase of the refurbishment includes the construction of a new, state-of-the-art fitness and health suite which will boast a fitness facility, completed with the most modern fitness equipment, which will cater for both disabled and able bodied customers. The new fitness suite will be situated over two floors, close to new changing and showering facilities that will include separate disabled changing and showering facilities. The Health Suite will also contain new Saunas and Steam Rooms. This new development will be an exciting addition to the Omagh Leisure Complex's facilities, and will be the first stage of an overall redevelopment programme that will see the remaining facilities in the complex upgraded and modernised.


At the signing of the contract for the construction of the Leisure Complex extension the Chairman of Omagh District Council, Councillor Bert Wilson welcomed the commencement of project, and highlighted the Council's commitment to enhancing the quality of life of the residents of the district through the provision of first class sport and recreation facilities. "People are becoming ever more aware of the importance of regular exercise for maintaining health and well being, and the Council is committed to developing the highest quality leisure facilities for the residents of the district," he said.

Local contractors McCann Brothers have been appointed to carry out the work and it is anticipated that work will take 52 weeks to complete. The Sauna and Steam Room have been closed for the duration of the development and will re-open in the new Health Suite at the end of 2008, and the Fitness Suite has been relocated to temporary accommodation upstairs.

While every effort is being made to minimise disruption to services and facilities during the refurbishment, there may be occasions during the year when there will be further, short term relocation or closure of certain facilities. Omagh District Council has asked for customers' patience during the construction work but is confident that the end result will be worth the temporary inconvenience.
