Petition Launched For Donegal Railway Line

Donegal Deputy Joe McHugh, has launched an online petition for a railway system to be constructed in the Northwest which will eventually be presented to Transport Minister Noel Dempsey.

On the 'Donegal Matters' website Deputy Joe McHugh said that a line from Sligo to Derry through Donegal would be a major boost to tourism in Ireland.

Mr McHugh said: "If one observes a map of Ireland's rail network, there is a rail line running from Derry, right around the country and stops in Sligo. We, in Donegal for some reason are not entitled to a railway line.


"larnrod Eireann is re-opening a number of old lines around the country. Limerick to Ennis is to be reopened and eventually to Athenry and Claremorris, as well as Cork to Midleton. There are a number of plans for new tracks in Dublin including a metro, and a line to Navan. Why can’t there be a line from Claremorris on to Sligo, and to Letterkenny and Derry?"

Mr McHugh says he's been encouraged by the response the petition has received so far.
