The development of a major new public park and amenity area at Castletroy in County Limerick will commence in early December, according to Limerick County Council.
The announcement follows the signing of a €2.2 million contract between the Local Authority and contractor L&M Keating of Kilmihil, Co Clare. The development of the 17-acre park, designed by Nicholas de Jong Associates of Urban Design in Limerick, follows an extensive public consultation with the Castletroy community and local school children. It is anticipated that construction work on the project will be completed by the middle of next year.
'Castletroy Park' will feature a fully equipped children’s playground, a skateboard area, 1.2km of pedestrian pathways, a circular cycle route, and a central performance/exhibition area with covering structure. The development will also feature an array of natural habitats, including a 4,300 sq. metre lake, wetlands, wildflower grass areas and woodlands.
Cllr Kevin Sheahan, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, described the new park and amenity area as a significant and welcome addition to Limerick’s outdoor recreational infrastructure.
"I am very impressed with the proposed development, which I hope will become a focal point for the people of the locality and beyond. I am sure that, once completed, it will be a beautiful, accessible and convenient setting for relaxation and recreation," he said.
"The provision of this state of the art public park demonstrates the commitment of Limerick County Council to help improve the quality of life for local communities. The development will be of particular benefit to the growing population of Castletroy and surrounding areas."
L&M Keating Ltd, with an annual turnover of €40 million, currently employs 105 permanent staff and is best known for constructing the 5-star Lodge and Clubhouse at Doonbeg Golf Club. The company, which recently won a national award for its refurbishment of St Senan's Church in Kilrush, was also involved in the construction of the newly opened University of Limerick Living Bridge across the River Shannon.
