Works Programme 'To Prevent Future Damage Of Jail'

A programme of works has been put in place for Armagh Jail to prevent future damage and provide safe access for visitors, it has emerged.

Lurgan-based company, Piper-hill Construction began carrying out the work on October 15 and it is due to be completed by December 21.

A Government spokesperson revealed that Armagh City and District Council recently appointed a team of experts to review the building and develop a brief for potential developers, which would outline the site's main features.


It is understood the site brief will be finalised by the close of 2007 and private investors will begin to offer proposals at the beginning of next year.

Meanwhile, Armagh City and District Council is due to find out this month if it has been awarded funding for the development of a major public park in the city.

Palace Park scheme will comprise of a major leisure centre, sporting and recreational facilities. The plans are subject to grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
