White Young Green (WYG), the multi-disciplinary consultancy to the built, natural and social environment, announced it has won a contract to survey buildings on the route of the proposed tunnels for the £120 million Belfast Sewers Project, which will upgrade Belfast’s ageing sewer network and reduce the risk of flooding.
The company is working with Project Managers Atkins to assist in the delivery of Northern Ireland Water’s Stormwater Management Works, where a 9.5km tunnel system will be built within the city centre to transfer excess stormwater from Belfast’s sewers to a major new pumping station for treatment and discharge to sea.
The main four-metre diameter tunnel will start at Cromac Street and end at a new pumping station at Belfast Wastewater Treatment Works in Duncrue Street, near the M2 motorway.
WYG’s Civil and Structural Engineers and Building Surveyors will be responsible for surveying hundreds of properties on the planned route of the new storm sewer to record their structural condition prior to and post construction.
Harry Brett, Director of WYG Belfast Civil and Structural Engineering said: "The Storm Water Management works are a vital part of the upgrading of the sewer system in Belfast and we’re pleased to be able bring our building surveying expertise to the project.
"It's essential that every building on the storm sewer route is thoroughly surveyed ahead of construction, especially in Belfast, where we have so many buildings of historic and architectural importance."
WYG is also currently working with Northern Ireland Water on Whitehouse, Carrickfergus and Ards Peninsula Wastewater Treatment and Collection Systems.
