Irish Firm Hopes To Build ‘Green’ Homes

An Irish building firm has made the shortlist to build Britain's first carbon neutral housing scheme next year.

MJ Gleeson has submitted plans for a €53 million carbon neutral homes scheme on the site of a listed former hospital building on the outskirts of Bristol.

Galway bricklayer Michael Joseph Gleeson founded the company over 100 years ago. It built airfields and hospitals throughout the Second World War, then motorways and power stations during the Sixties and Seventies.

The company is now chaired by Dermot Gleeson.

A ‘carbon challenge’ has been set by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and if approved MJ Gleeson’s plans will se the construction of 150 ‘green’ homes.

It is understood the firm’s timber-framed green home designs will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero, and help save the average family €900 on annual energy bills.
