Gas Networks Ireland has announced the student from Terenure and Tipperary who have won its nationwide carbon monoxide awareness poster competition.
Gas Networks Ireland, collaborating with Junior Achievement Ireland (JAI), invited submissions for its carbon monoxide safety poster competition. Participation was open to students who had successfully finished the 'Energize' Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) educational program.
The Energize programme fosters a love for science in primary school students across Ireland by combining practical and engaging lessons. Carbon monoxide awareness is a core component of the programme.
Jessica O'Brien from sixth class at Bunscoil na Catharach in Cahir, was one of the winners of the competition. Jessica's poster impressed the judges, outlining the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning and the crucial role of carbon monoxide alarms in our homes.
Speaking as she presented Bunscoil na Catharach with an iPad for use in their school classroom, Gas Networks Ireland’s Social Sustainability Manager, Gráinne O'Reilly said: "Students like Jessica expressed her creative thinking to outline carbon monoxide safety. Her poster not only educates but motivates us all to prioritise safety measures in our homes. Huge congratulations to Jessica."
Yvonne Fahy, Bunscoil na Catharach’s sixth class teacher said: "The Energize programme provided a great opportunity for students to get involved in STEAM subjects in a way that sparks their curiosity for science. It was incredibly rewarding to witness them explore the world of science in such a fun and engaging manner."
Hasan Modh Nadir from sixth class at Harold's Cross National School in Terenue, also was a winner of the competition. Hasan's colourful creation outlined the side effects of carbon monoxide poisoning and the importance of having a carbon monoxide alarm in your home.
Speaking as she presented Harold's Cross National School with an iPad for use in their school classroom, Gas Networks Ireland’s Customer Care Analyst, Kira Fox said: "Through creativity, students like Hasan highlight the importance of carbon monoxide safety. Their artwork not only educates but inspires us all to priorities safety in our homes. Congratulations to Hasan for winning an iPad for his classroom."
Chelsey Murray, Harold’s Cross National School’s sixth class teacher said: "It was very rewarding to watch how the students explored the world of science in a creative and exciting way."
