Construction News Image
A contract has been signed between Cork County Council and J.D. Buckley Construction Ltd for the development of 16 social housing units at Sleaveen East, Macroom in County Cork.

The new homes will feature a blend of four 2-bedroom townhouses, ten 1-bedroom apartments and two 2-bedroom apartments. The estimated cost of the project is approximately €3.3 million excluding VAT.

The upcoming phase marks the second stage of Cork County Council's development efforts. The initial phase, which has recently completed, saw the transformation of a derelict vacant site in the town centre into an eight-unit apartment complex.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Frank O'Flynn commented:

"I am delighted to welcome the beginning of phase two of this transformative housing development in Macroom. By taking a once derelict site and bringing it back to life, this project will breathe new life into the town centre, as well as delivering much needed new homes in the heart of the community."

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Valerie O'Sullivan added: "As well as new build Social Housing on greenfield sites, Cork County Council seeks opportunities to regenerate vacant and derelict sites in town centres by developing new accommodation. This project demonstrates that the regeneration of towns is one of the objectives of Housing for All -the government’s housing plan to 2030. Cork County Council has proven to be an organisation capable of producing high quality housing and, subject to funding, will continue to identify and develop sites such as this to re-energise towns and build new communities."

The project has been brought from detailed design to construction stage by a multidisciplinary team led by Cork County Council’s Housing Directorate Architect’s Section, Ray Keane Associates Civil and Structural Engineers, Karl Slyne Quantity Surveyors Ltd and DKP Building Services.
