€20m Roscommon Town Drainage Scheme Complete

Construction News Image
Uisce Éireann has completed the €20 million Roscommon Town Main Drainage scheme which leads to community growth, better water quality in the Jiggy and Hind rivers and reduced risk of sewer flooding.

Crews installed more than seven kilometres of new sewers and upgraded and constructed pumping stations across the town as part of the project.

Uisce Éireann’s Eunan Canavan said: "The benefits of the works in terms of the development of the town are immense, supporting housing and commercial development. The original sewer network was overloaded but our works means it can now provide for both current and future population growth in the town."

"It's also good news for water quality in the local rivers, ensuring compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive to protect our environment.

"We understand the inconvenience projects of this magnitude can have on local businesses and residents. Uisce Éireann is grateful for the community’s support while we delivered this critical project for the people of Roscommon town."

Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council John Keogh has welcomed the major infrastructural project. In his election as Cathaoirleach address last year, Cllr Keogh gave a commitment to promote Roscommon as a tourism destination. He stated: "I said from the outset that in order to enable growth and development infrastructure is needed and the Roscommon Town Main Drainage Scheme is a vital piece of the jigsaw puzzle in terms of promoting tourism and job creation."
