Newry DEA Forum in collaboration with Amplified Arts NI and Newry BID, has launched 'Street Dreams' which is a new reimaging project aimed at adding vibrancy and cultural significance to the city centre.
This project begins with the transformation of ordinary utility boxes found throughout the city centre into works of art. Typically unnoticed in urban settings, these boxes will now become canvases showcasing the unique identity and spirit of Newry.
The artwork designs are meticulously crafted by local artists who work alongside different community groups to decides the theme and concept for each of the pieces. The Magnet Young Adult Centre, in collaboration with the skilled local artist Zippy, is the first group to witness their inspired artwork on four utility boxes, all reflecting their chosen theme, 'Music in Nature'.
Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte said: "The Street Dreams reimaging project represents how artists can use the creative vision of community groups to redefine public spaces and foster a sense of pride and ownership within the community. By involving our young people and community groups in the design process we are not only beautifying our urban landscape but also nurturing a sense of belonging and civic engagement.
"Furthermore, we would like to thank the contribution of Zippy, the talented artist responsible for installing the first four pieces. Zippy's signature style of bold and energetic, topographic murals has brought their ideas to life, turning a vision into reality."
