GRAHAM has announced that Houndshill Shopping Centre has reached completion, marking a significant chapter in Blackpool's town centre improvement efforts.
Funded by £5 million from the Government's Getting Building Fund, the Houndshill Phase Two extension has transformed the town centre. The programme introduces a range of entertainment, retail and leisure facilities, including the IMAX-equipped Backlot Cinema & Diner. Opening its doors on 22 March, the IMAX screen at The Backlot Cinema & Diner is Blackpool's first-ever IMAX screen. It is one of the largest in the North West, promises an unparalleled cinematic experience for visitors, measuring an impressive 10.85 metres in height and 19.87 metres in width.
GRAHAM served as the lead contractor, supported by CBRE in the role of project manager and cost consultant. With over 100 jobs created, redevelopment of brownfield land, and an increase of 1.2 million shoppers and visitors anticipated annually, the completion of the extension represents a significant milestone in Blackpool's ongoing transformation journey.
Stephen Van den Hoek, Regional Director at GRAHAM, said: "The completion of the Houndshill Phase Two extension is a key moment in Blackpool's redevelopment, underscoring the council's dedication to enhancing the town's appeal and economic prosperity. We are thrilled to have played a role in shaping Blackpool's future, providing a vibrant new hub for residents and visitors alike."
Cllr Mark Smith, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Levelling Up – Place, said: "We’re delighted to see the doors to The Backlot Cinema & Diner and IMAX open here in Blackpool. The multi-cinema complex will be a major draw for residents and visitors to the town centre, providing a brand new state-of-the-art cinematic experience for all ages. The ambitious project has created over 100 jobs, both directly through the scheme and locally, in addition to over 260 construction jobs throughout the build period. With an anticipated increase of 1.2m shoppers and visitors to the Houndshill Shopping Centre, a destination for premium entertainment and events, like Backlot Cinema, is a key part of Blackpool’s £2bn Growth and Prosperity programme, with aims to boost the economy, create more local jobs and provide more things to see and do."
Natalie Palframan, Key Account Manager at Procure Partnerships Framework, commented: "Procure Partnerships Framework is delighted to have played a role in the procurement of this project, supporting the council's commendable efforts in regeneration. The successful completion of the Houndshill Phase Two extension marks a transformative chapter in Blackpool's town centre revitalisation. We extend our congratulations to GRAHAM, CBRE, and all involved stakeholders for their outstanding contributions. The project not only boosts the town centre’s entertainment and retail offerings but also promises to invigorate Blackpool's economic landscape, create jobs, and enhance tourism."
