Uisce Éireann has announced that a €8.6 million investment project is now underway in Croom which will improve the water supply of 1,700 customers.
Crews are already on the ground, constructing six kilometres of rising main which will connect Croom to the Limerick City supply (Clareville Water Treatment Plant) which will support social and economic development in the Limerick village.
The works will take place along the northern end of the N20, from Ballygeale, and continue onto the L-1478 towards Croom. In Croom, the works will commence on the L1408 (St. Senan’s Terrace) and conclude on Towerfield Road at the site of the existing water tower.
In order to facilitate the works, a road closure will be required along the L-1478 and L-1408 in 2024.
Croom has been identified by Uisce Éireann as an area where the existing drinking water infrastructure is not sufficient to meet demand and one which is prone to frequent night-time restrictions.
The current infrastructure has also created supply challenges for existing customers while impacting the delivery of new housing developments in the area.
Uisce Éireann's Portfolio Manager, Paul Cremin, said: "The delivery of these works will help provide a safer, more secure water supply for the businesses and communities while also supporting future developments within the community. We would like to thank customers in advance for their patience and cooperation during the works. We know based on previous experiences that the short-term inconvenience will be overshadowed by the lasting benefits."
Uisce Éireann expects the current phase of the works to last until mid-2024, with commissioning of the existing pipeline from the city to Attyfynn towards the end of 2024.
