The new multi-purpose MTU Arena at Munster Technological University (MTU) Bishopstown campus has officially opened.
The facilities at the Arena include a large 1,340m2 hall, two studios, a café and a gym.
This new Arena caters for sports, societies and other university activities such as conferring ceremonies, careers fairs, examinations. Due to the main hall of the Arena being able to accommodate 1,200 people, the venue will also be available for hire by external groups, including local community groups, for concerts, exhibitions and other events.
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD opened the facility. He said: "This state-of-the-art building is going to be transformational for students and staff of MTU.
"This building and hub of activity will prove to be a much-needed facility for MTU students, staff and the wider community.
"This is more than just a building; it is a symbol of opportunities, a gateway to fostering diverse talents, and a platform to facilitate community engagement at various levels".
Professor Maggie Cusack, President of Munster Technological University, said: "MTU Arena was built in just two years despite many challenges, not least a global pandemic. The delivery of this state-of-the-art building is a testament to the dedication of all those involved in the project and to MTU’s commitment to being a truly great university.
"The Arena had its soft opening earlier this year, and the past six months have already shown what a huge benefit it is to current students and staff, as well as the wider South West Region."
