NIE Networks Introduces New Domestic Connection Design

NIE Networks has introduced a new design standard for domestic connections that will prepare the network for a net zero future.

The new design standard comes into effect on 01 November 2023 and will facilitate the future installation of low carbon technologies such as Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers and heat pumps.

As more people make the change to low-carbon technologies, there has been an increased demand on the network. In the past this has meant that the network needed costly upgrades to be able to facilitate the low carbon technology wishing to connect.


A consultation took place earlier this year to seek views on how to best accommodate

the future installation of low-carbon technologies. NIE Networks said the feedback showed broad support for the design of new connections that will support a higher capacity.

These new connections may increase the cost for customers connecting for the first time, although it prevents costly upgrade works and local disruption to the network.
