Sinn Féin To Meet With Officials To Discuss A5 Project

Construction News Image
Sinn Féin has announced it is to meet with officials to ensure contractors and design teams will be ready to commence again on the A5 project next spring.

The party's West Tyrone MP, Órfhlaith Begley, made the comments after it was confirmed that the report and findings from the A5 Public Inquiry will be issued by the end of December 2023.

Órfhlaith Begley stated the A5 is "one of the most dangerous roads on this island and has been the scene of heartbreak for too many families".

In a statement, the West Tyrone MP said: "I am confident that the PAC's report and findings will highlight the need for the A5 to proceed and allow for work to begin again next year.

"The Department has confirmed there should be no further legal challenges, then contractors could gain possession of their respective sites from Spring 2024.

"I will be meeting with departmental officials to ensure their contractors and design teams will be ready to meet these current dates.

"At the recent public inquiry there was widespread support for the delivery of the A5 from all sections of the local community and business leaders.

"The upgrade is needed for road safety and to unlock the economic potential of this region, while attracting further investment west of the Bann.

"It is deeply frustrating that a small minority have delayed this project due to continual legal challenges. The delivery of the A5 is a key strategic priority and must proceed without delay following the findings of this report."
