Construction News Image
Galway City Council has appointed a contractor to upgrade Quay Street.

The improvement works will remove uneven surfaces and surface water ponding.

Commencing next week, the works will be completed in two stages, Part A and Part B.

A road closure for Part A will be in place 24/7 from 2 October to 30 November. Whereby Quay Street will be closed from the Junction of Cross Street to the intersection with the exit from Leonardo Hotel. The section of High Street between its Junction with Shop Street and Cross Street will also be closed to HGV traffic.

A temporary diversion route will be in place via Mainguard Street, Cross Street, Flood Street, turning left on to the R336 New Dock Street to Merchants Road Lower and further right on the R336 continuing along the Spanish Parade.

Works in Part B (Quay Street Upper) will be completed in January and February 2024.

During December and over the Christmas period, no works will take place.

Patrick Greene, Director of Services with Galway City Council, said: "Works in the pedestrian area began in 2019, and have been progressed in discrete sections, as we are very conscious of avoiding works on the street during the peak summer and Christmas trading periods. This approach has worked well to date, with the cooperation of all stakeholders – and I wish to thank them for their cooperation and collaboration to date. A contractor has been appointed to progress this next phase of works, which will start next week, with works to be progressed under a formal road closure. The team in Transport have been liaising with local businesses and stakeholders in the immediate vicinity of the works area, and engagement will continue throughout the project, with a dedicated point of contact available 24 hours a day. Some of the works will be underground – such as drainage and underground services upgrades, and removal of soft ground, and the finished works will bring a real improvement to the street".

The rehabilitation and drainage upgrade works will be substantially complete by the end of February.
