South Regional College's (SRC) proposed new Innovation Centre on the site of the former Newry Sports Centre has scooped a prestigious award.
The centre was named 'Highly Commended' for the 'Most Innovative Public Sector Project' at the 2023 Digital Construction Awards.
The awards recognise excellence across the construction industry.
During the initial concept design phase, McAdam used cutting-edge tools to automatically generate design solutions, evaluating their effects on energy consumption, cost, and visual impact on Patrick Street. Building Information Modelling (BIM) was utilised to develop 3D renditions of the design, while virtual reality technology enabled immersive walk-through experiences of the proposed design for both SRC staff and students. The project also showcased innovation in information management, featuring an industry-leading Project Dashboard that tracked progress in various areas, including scope of works, design, and validation of information.
McAdam and the Estates team of SRC collaborated closely to develop a design that combines functionality and aesthetics.
The ground floor showcases extensive glazing, enabling the public to engage with the building's interior. The design element allows for views of the robotics within the Engineering Faculty, as well as open-plan training areas. The first floor includes the Science Laboratories, a suite of ICT spaces, and a Student Social space.
Peter Monaghan, at SRC said: "The Digital Construction Live Awards celebrate and recognise excellence across the Construction Industry. SRC along with our Architects, McAdams Design Ltd. were awarded Highly Commended in the Category, Most Innovative Public Sector Project. The panel wanted to hear about exceptional adoption of technology and digital processes and how far nominees had pushed innovation on a project of this size and complexity. We are delighted to have received this recognition and look forward to progressing the project to the next stage."
