Work is set to get underway on a series of public realm improvements in Portrush.
Approximately £1.4 million is being invested by the Department for Communities (DfC) in the Kerr Street scheme. This will provide an uplift to one of the busiest walking routes in the resort and will create linkages to the previous work carried out by the Department in the town prior to the 2019 Open.
Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey, said: "The work to improve the area around Kerr Street will create a continuous, high-quality connection between the East and West Strands and will provide linkages to the other regeneration schemes already completed. This investment will build on and complement the regeneration work already completed in Portrush, creating a vibrant and welcoming environment around the Kerr Street area for residents, businesses and visitors."
The project is managed by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council who have appointed Northstone (NI) Ltd to carry out the construction work on the public realm scheme, with work scheduled to commence in November. Improvements will include new surfacing, bespoke lighting and new street furniture with works due to be completed by Summer 2023.
The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Ivor Wallace, added: "This is a much welcome announcement, and we are very grateful to the Department for Communities for making the funding available to progress this. Portrush has been transformed by environmental improvement schemes in various sections of the town, and this area will complement and reflect works done elsewhere. The walkway between Kerr Street and the harbour is one of the most popular scenic routes on our coast, often used by locals, visitors and for public events. The planned improvements can only enhance its appeal, improve safety, and create a space more accessible to all, and I look forward to seeing its completion."
