Work Continues On Masterplan For Glenarm

Construction News Image
Work is progressing on the development of a masterplan to unlock the potential of County Antrim village Glenarm.

The Glenarm Steering Committee, a group of villagers, elected members and council officers, is working with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to capitalise on tourism and wider economic opportunities for the area.

The picturesque village on the world-renowned Causeway Coastal Route is earmarked for an exciting programme of works aimed at transforming the area for locals and visitors alike.

The masterplan includes ideas to develop the harbour, such as considering options to bring in temporary and long-term, high-quality eating facilities.

Other areas being looked at for development and community use are the Eglinton Yard and former quarry site. The Council has engaged a leading design firm to bring forward options to consider.

The Council and the steering committee sub-group have also been working on plans to enhance some of the local village features in the immediate term.

New tourism signage is planned to be rolled out in the village throughout the summer and a new toilet block, including features for camping vans, is planned for construction in September.

The Eglinton Yard barn will undergo some works to address issues with its roof, which is in poor condition, and this will allow the Council to preserve the heritage value of this historical asset and potentially open up the Eglinton Yard for future community use.

The steering committee has highlighted other areas for improvement, including addressing water flow at the bridge over the Glenarm River, improving street lighting and planning for a general clean-up and potential new painting/refurbishment scheme for parts of the village. The group and Council are also looking at potential funding opportunities open to the village.
