The Green Party has announced it has published a new report on Dublin's Capel Street.

The Vision for Capel Street contains recommendations for the future development of the street which is due to be traffic free from May of this year. The report was commissioned by Ciarán Cuffe MEP and launched by Minister of State Malcolm Noonan TD on Dublin’s Grattan Bridge.

Mr. Cuffe welcomed Dublin City Council's car-free proposals for Capel Street, and said it is a golden opportunity to initiate other improvements such as urban greening, public seating, and sculpture.

Speaking at the launch he said: "Capel Street is a vital part of Dublin's social fabric, and economic life. For more than three centuries it has attracted people from all walks of life, provided a home for immigrants, and celebrated diversity, not least the LGBTQ+ community. If carefully managed and developed, it can continue to do this, and be an attractive part of Dublin life in the in the years ahead.

"The rich history and diversity of the street should be celebrated with an annual festival that honours the people and communities that made and continue to make this street an attractive part of Dublin. Removing traffic from the street is an opportunity to reclaim the space for the people of Dublin with urban greening, space for play and relaxation.

"This Vision for Capel Street builds on a report produced by Dr. Jackie Bourke and European Parliament interns Nia Davies, Alan Bolger, and Laura Rankin last Summer. I am indebted to them for their hard work and commitment."
