Problematic Water Mains Replaced In Dungarvan

Construction News Image
A programme of water mains improvements has been completed in the County Waterford town of Dungarvan.

Led by Irish Water, the project along the Gold Coast Road began in October 2021 and saw approximately 1,450 metres of water mains replaced with new, modern pipes. These works were carried out as part of Irish Water's National Leakage Reduction Programme, which has seen €500m invested by the utility to reduce leakage nationally to 38% by the end of last year, 2021. Full reinstatement of the road is expected to be completed in spring 2022.

Joe Carroll, Networks Regional Lead with Irish Water, said: "We are delighted to have successfully delivered an improved water supply to customers along the Gold Coast Road, by replacing these water mains. We would like to thank the local community for their patience while we were working in the area. As well as an improved water supply for the communities along the Gold Coast Road and surrounding areas in Dungarvan, the works will also deliver efficiencies including cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future. We have also achieved very notable leakage savings with the equivalent of almost 1,000 peoples average daily use saved through the rehabilitation works."

Pat McCarthy, a Senior Engineer with Waterford City and County Council, added: "The existing water mains were problematic for some time, so it's great to see the works complete. The replacement of these pipes and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages, ensuring a more reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area. It will also eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground."
