Pilot Revitalisation Scheme Underway In Belfast City Centre

Construction News Image
A key area in Belfast city centre has undergone a pilot scheme to revitalise the surroundings, creating an improved pedestrian and active travel experience.

The work on Adelaide Street includes lit structures, greening and areas for rest and play, while also referencing the built heritage and history of the area.

With complete funding support from Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon's blue/green fund, the project will contribute to the city's shared agenda of developing a greener, more accessible, liveable and age friendly city through the provision of additional space for walking, sitting, play and outdoor dining.

Announcing the commencement of works on Adelaide Street yesterday, 02 November, Minister Mallon said: "In June 2021 I announced £20 million of funding for blue/green infrastructure to support transformation of our communities, promoting active travel and shaping our places to live in the new normal. I am pleased to invest some of that fund in Belfast city centre.

"We are all learning to adapt in these changing times and collaborative projects with councils such as this are helping transform our public spaces and reenergising the city centre into a greener, cleaner more sustainable environment.

"I want our towns and cities to be pleasant, safe and healthy places to be where we can move around, shop, relax and socialise with friends. Redesigning our urban spaces does not just benefit locals but also attracts visitors and helps build business. I look forward to seeing these schemes being completed and our public spaces put to good use."

The project, which is being delivered in partnership with Belfast City Council, forms part of the wider plans to enhance city centre infrastructure post-Covid 19 and has been developed through extensive research and engagement.

Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Kate Nicholl added: "Projects like this help us realise the ambitions within our Bolder Vision for the city, looking at how we can reduce the dominance of cars, encourage sustainable transport and also create spaces that are vibrant and inviting. At the heart of our Bolder Vision is creating a city that is sustainable, walkable and connects communities and that requires a significant rethink of how the city's streets and open spaces are used – particularly as we continue our post-Covid recovery journey and focus on revitalising our city centre."

Lane closures will be in operation as the scheme is being delivered and road users are asked to be patient and exercise caution in the vicinity of the work. A road closure may be required for short periods however the Department will keep the public informed in advance.
