Improvement Works To Galloon Bridge Welcomed

Construction News Image
The SDLP has welcomed the announcement that improvement works are to be carried on Galloon Bridge in Newtownbutler.

The work proposed involves phased concrete repairs to the underside of the bridge which will result in reduced weight restrictions on certain days during the construction period. The work is due to commence in September.

SDLP Councillor Garbhan McPhillips said it will be "a major boost to the local area".

He said: "This funding from SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon will make the bridge safer for all who use it and stop it from deteriorating any further, preserving an important transport link for the local community.

"Weather-permitting the work is set to take only 12 weeks, which would have the bridge back and surrounding area back to normal by November 17. It is welcome that traffic won't be overly affected while the work is taking place, the bridge will still be in operation, but I would urge those wishing to travel via Galloon Bridge to be aware of temporary vehicle weight limits for larger vehicles which will be required during parts of the work. People using the Lough Erne Waterway Navigation System will also be affected and I would ask water craft users to be mindful of the diversionary signage in place as the navigation channel under the bridge will be closed while the work is carried out.

"The delivery of these improvements is a further indication of the SDLP and Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon’s determination to deliver for people here. She has listened to the concerns of the community and our local reps and provided funding to get this much needed work over the line."
