A £520,000 major road improvement scheme for the A509 Derrylin Road at Derryhowlaght, Enniskillen, will commence on Monday 21 June 2021, the Department for Infrastructure has announced.
The scheme which will include carriageway road widening, realignment and resurfacing works is the final stage of a three stage project at a total cost of approximately £1.2 million.
Making the announcement Minister Mallon said: "I am pleased to announce this further significant investment in the Derryhowlaght area. During the works the opportunity will also be taken to introduce a new footway on the western side of the realigned carriageway. The completion of this scheme will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network and will deliver significant benefits for all road users on this busy cross border road.
"Drainage ponds will be used at each end of the scheme to catch all of the surface water running from a system of new gullies on the carriageway. These sustainable drainage ponds also known as "SUD's" will act as filters to slow down and cleanse the flow of dirty road surface water into adjacent waterways, through a process of sedimentation we hope to reduce contamination from dirty road surface water and other pollutions which will have a positive impact on the environment."
To ensure the safety of road users and workers it will be necessary to initially operate a number of lane closures however a full road closure will be put in place from 19 July 2021 for a period of approximately seven weeks.
A two way diversion route will be signed via A32 Swanlinbar Road and A4 Sligo Road between Enniskillen and Derrylin.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience, however, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the area.
In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with extra care when travelling in the vicinity of the works.
The dates and duration of the works will be dependent on the progress of the scheme and on favourable weather conditions. All work will be carried out in line with current public health and safety advice with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
