Dublin City Council is planning to recommence its Energy Efficiency Retrofitting Programme this month.
Recently, the Department of Housing, Heritage and Local Government issued approval and a funding allocation of €7.7 million that will enable the City Council to retrofit a further 204 properties.
The Energy Efficiency Retrofitting Programme is designed to reduce unnecessary energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and demands for non-renewable resources in Dublin City Council's housing stock. It also provides tenants with healthier living conditions and offers significant money savings in heating costs.
The programme so far has been rolled out on a phased basis. Phase One of the programme commenced in 2013 and was completed in 2018 with 8,057 social houses upgraded at a cost of €14.8 million. This was fully funded by the Department of Housing, Heritage and Local Government. Phase Two of the programme commenced in 2018 with 896 social houses upgraded at a cost of €16.3 million. This phase was partially funded, and to date, €10.1 million of costs has been recouped from the Department of Housing, Heritage and Local Government. A further 2,770 houses remain to be upgraded under this phase of the programme.
A total of 8,953 of Dublin City Council’s social houses have been upgraded to date with an estimated 87,533 tonnes of CO2 savings resulting in an estimated €46.4 million saved in energy bills for our tenants. (Figures up to the end of 2019).
A further 2,770 houses remain under phase two and the budget required to complete this work is in the region of €86 million. The timeframe involved in completing phase two of the programme will be dependent on the continuation of funding support from the Department.
