Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has been recognised for its excellence in energy efficiency with a prestigious accreditation.
The local authority was awarded ISO 50001, an internationally recognised certified energy management system for organisations, from Certification Europe for their Energy Management System for the energy use under the control of dlr.
An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Shay Brennan said: "dlr play an exemplar role in energy efficiency and continue to set the benchmark in energy best practice as exciting and innovative sustainable energy solutions and practices emerge. dlr are investing in, and delivering, appropriate, effective and sustainable solutions to help Ireland’s transition to a clean energy future."
Energy assessments are being carried out on dlr buildings that are Significant Energy Users to develop a plan to reduce energy use. 52% of public lighting in the county has been upgraded to LED. dlr has recently increased its electric fleet to a total of twenty-one and is considering more eco-friendly vehicles that are more versatile in their use, manufactured and fuelled with a lower carbon impact. Energy Performance Contracts are being progressed to improve energy efficiency in Council owned buildings.
In 2017 Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council became the first Dublin Local Authority to reach compliance with ISO50001 Energy Management System for its full corporate energy load and won the Leadership in Public Sector category at the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland's (SEAI) Awards 2019.
