NI MP Backs 'Vital' Heathrow Expansion

Construction News Image
A DUP MP has thrown his support behind the creation of a third runway at Heathrow as doubt surrounds the expansion plans.

North Antrim MP Ian Paisley said the long-campaigned for development is "vital" to the future economic growth of the UK.

The plans were plunged into jeopardy yesterday as a court ruled that the UK Government must reconsider its support because of its impact on the environment.

Those campaigning against the expansion hailed the decision as a victory, however it's understood the airport is pursuing the expansion work.

Mr Paisley urged the UK government to do all it can to ensure the runway is delivered.

"Northern Ireland has a key role to play in the construction of that runway and I am calling on the Prime Minister to unlock the immense potential this infrastructure project offers UK industry.

"I have had discussions with Heathrow management this morning and I intend to meet with the Transport Secretary as a matter of urgency.

"The scale of this opportunity and the impact it would have on our economy is so vast, we cannot allow it to pass."

Chief Executive of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council Anne Donaghy added her support to the development

"We have been working to play an important role in the expansion of Heathrow since 2017, and as an area that has suffered large job losses and a huge drop in GVA in recent years, we identified this as a major opportunity within our economic fightback plan," Ms Donaghy said.

"We have been in discussions with the Graham Group, who are currently leading our Heathrow Logistics Hub bid, and they too are extremely eager for a solution to be agreed to move this project forward.

"Our political representatives will ensure Westminster is left in no doubt of the impact the building of the third runway could have on our area and Northern Ireland as a whole."
