Cork County Council has struck a deal with a contractor to deliver a €225,000 pathway scheme in Mallow.
Glenville-based company Finucane & Sons Plant Hire & Civil Engineering Ltd has signed on to complete the work in Mallow Town Park.
The works will include the extension of the existing concrete pathway from the pedestrian bridge in the Town Park below the Castle Park to the rear entrance to Castlelands Housing Estate, the construction of a 3m wide concrete pathway, to accommodate a future cycleway for a length of 785m, installing a stone pillar entrance to the Park via Castlelands and an interpretative display board.
This project forms part of the initial phase of the framework plans, for an integrated park network, landmark amenity and tourist destination for Mallow Castle Park, Mallow Town Park and the Spa House Park.
Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Christopher O'Sullivan commented: "Cork County Council has ambitious plans for Mallow. These framework plans allow for the phased and incremental development of the Park as a regional destination as well as a fantastic local attraction. They also include the potential development of the existing gardens and historic landscape at Mallow Castle together with the main Mallow Town Park and the Spa House Park. The appointment of this contract to Finucane & Sons is one of the first steps in growing our vision for Mallow."
The Department of Rural & Community Development is supporting the scheme with €200k investment from its 2018 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Fund.
Work on the new pathway is expected to commence shortly ahead of scheduled completion in November.
