The final contracts have been signed for Irish Water's €44 million upgrades to the Letterkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme.
The construction of a new water treatment plant at Goldrum and the rehabilitation of water mains as part of the N56 Coolboy to Kilmacrennan road realignment project are already underway.
Carty Contractors and MEIC Ltd will deliver the remaining two projects, totalling an investment of over €19m.
MEIC's project will see 19km of new interconnecting watermains between the Letterkenny, Pollan, Cranford, Milford and Rathmullan Water Supply Schemes, to provide security of supply and address the limited availability of water from existing sources in the broader Letterkenny area. This includes 11.9km of trunk mains from Manorcunningham to Letterkenny as well as three booster pumping stations.
Carty Contractors will replace sections of the trunk and distribution mains along the N56 which serves Letterkenny from the water treatment plant at Goldrum. This replacement work is for both network rehabilitation and security of supply given the criticality of the trunk main. In total over 6.3km of new pipework will be laid for this contract.
Works are due to commence in the coming weeks and are expected to be completed by 2021.
David McLoone, Irish Water said: "The Letterkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme (RWSS) is on the Environmental Protection Agency's Remedial Action List for inadequate treatment. The overall Letterkenny RWSS project is in place to address these issues, and is being delivered across four construction contracts, two of which are underway, with the remaining two due to commence in the coming weeks."
The entire project is being delivered in partnership with Irish Water and Donegal County Council.
When complete, residents, businesses and visitors to Letterkenny will enjoy a clean, safe and secure drinking water supply.
