Construction News Image
Work is continuing on a multi-million euro water mains upgrade project across Galway.

On Monday, Irish Water and Galway City Council water services staff updated Councillors on the progress of works taking place across the city.

The briefing focused on leakage reduction works, which are targeting the replacement of ageing water mains, prone to frequent bursts in a number of locations throughout the city as well as the large scale rehabilitation of 19kms of water mains.

Elsewhere, work is continuing on a rolling programme of works to replace ageing water mains prone to frequent bursts in a number of locations across the city as part of a €10 million investment. The project will focus on replacing ageing pipes in Prospect Hill, Claddagh, Bohermore, Shantalla, Rahoon, Newcastle, Taylor's Hill, Mervue, Roscam and Coolagh.

Irish Water's Leakage Reduction Programme Lead Dave Murphy said: "This week our teams will commission a new 700 metre section of water main in Briarhill replacing an old one that had been prone to frequent bursts. Next week they will start on the White Strand Road. The benefits include improvements to water supply, water pressure and reduced leakage. Once complete customers will enjoy an improved flow of water ensuring a more secure supply."

Padraig Hanly, Irish Water's Programme Regional Lead, said: "The replacement of ageing water mains in Galway City will ensure customers have a more reliable and secure water supply. Burst water mains are a common problem across the country from decades of under investment in water infrastructure. Irish Water is committed to addressing this and the replacement of these ageing water mains is part of Irish Water's ongoing investment in Ireland's water infrastructure."
