Leader of the party Steven Agnew also called on DUP MP Sammy Wilson to "let go of his hopeless devotion to coal" as coal-fired power stations will soon be obselete.
He was responding to comments by the East Antrim MP in the House of Commons criticising a policy which commits the government to phasing coal out of all electricity generation by 2025.

Mr Agnew said: "A lot of focus is put on the upfront cost, but when gas and coal are brought onto the system, that is when the prices of electricity rises.
"Northern Ireland is rich in renewable resources, particularly wind power, and the gradual switch to renewables will provide a long-term return on investment.
"Mr Wilson can bury his head in sand all he likes when it comes to climate change, but the tide is rising and the sand is going to be washed away."
