OPW Called To Survey Coastal Wetland Area Following Constant Erosion

Fianna Fáil is urging the Office of Public Works (OPW) to carry out a survey in Murrough, a 15km long coastal wetland area, following constant erosion in recent years.

TD for Wicklow and East Carlow, Stephen Donnelly, is to discuss the issue with the Minister of State for OPW and Flood Relief, Kevin Moran, next week.

Deputy Donnelly said: "The Murrough is an amazing resource, not just for Wicklow, but the entire county and it must be protected. Works have been conducted by both Wicklow County Council and Irish Rail in recent years to repair the worst of the damage, but what is needed now is a plan to return the wetland to its original state and keep it that way.


"Both Storm Ophelia and Brian caused further damage to the Murrough, with up to a metre of the coastal area washed away by the sea in places. We cannot have this situation continue. What we need is a plan to stop the damage from occurring in the first place.

"Furthermore, I will be asking that the OPW work with Wicklow County Council to offer the supports needed for a project of this scale."
