Councillors are being urged to support plans to develop 540 homes in Shanganagh in Dublin.
A cross chamber proposal is to be put forward to Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council today, 11 September.
The proposal was presented to the Chief Executive, Ms Philomena Poole, and her management team by a delegation of the co-sponsors including Sinn Fein Councillor Shane O'Brien, on Wednesday 23 August and agreement was reached to work together to further develop this innovative proposal for Shanganagh Urban Village Cooperative Housing Development which would consist of 200 social houses and apartments and 340 affordable homes.
Councillor O'Brien said: "There is now over 5,500 waiting on social housing lists in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown and thousands of other individuals and families who do qualify for social housing support that are struggling to pay rising private rents, and whom will never have any form of secure tenure without support.
"As local politicians we need to think outside the box in order to deliver social and affordable housing units in our area.
"That is what we have done with this plan. We have put aside party political rivalry and drawn up a plan that can deliver 540 homes in Shanganagh.
"Our plan can deliver quality social and affordable homes in a mixed tenure development based on the continental urban village design model. This is the most appropriate design model for the Shanganagh Castle site."
