Work To Improve Water Supply In Carraroe Complete

Construction News Image
Irish Water, in partnership with Galway County Council, has invested around €1 million to improve the water supply in Carraroe.

To demonstrate the works that were carried out in the area, Irish Water hosted a community open day at the Carraroe Water Treatment Plant on Friday, 07 April.

Works at the treatment plant were finished ahead of schedule and led to the lifting of the boil water notice which was in place from March to September 2016. The programme of works included modification of the existing water treatment plant and increased controls in the treatment process which has addressed water quality issues in the area. As a result of the works, which were carried out on behalf of Irish Water by EPS Group and Tobin Consulting Engineers, the treatment plant now meets all drinking water regulations.

Irish Water's Regional Information Specialist, Sean Corrigan, said: "Irish Water acknowledged that there were problems with the quality of drinking water in Carraroe. Listening to the local community these were problems that existed for over 30 or 40 years.

"The old treatment plant was not designed to adequately treat the sometimes sudden changes in the raw water source in Carraroe and major investment was required to modify and upgrade the plant to ensure the water met all drinking water regulations.

"This upgraded treatment plant has eradicated the THM problem, enabled the lifting of the Boil Water Notice, saw the removal of the Carraroe water supply scheme from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Remedial Action List (RAL) and ensures a good source of drinking water for the people of Carraroe. The newly upgraded treatment plant is a robust solution to a long standing problem."

The overall contract for the county-wide project was awarded to Carty Contractors.
