Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has opened a public consultation over the future of the Fernhill Estate and Gardens in Stepaside.
Fine Gael Dublin Rathdown Senator, Neale Richmond, said Fernhill could be a "world class park".
Mr Richmon said: "Acquired by the County Council in recent years, the Council are now looking for the public to have their say on the future of Fernhill.
"The Council has opened a short online survey so that the public can say what they would like to see at Fernhill in the future. The survey will remain open until the end of January on the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council website.
"Much discussion has been held about the potential of the 34 hectare estate that includes a large house, gate lodge and ancillary buildings.
"I think it is vital that the rich collection of flowers, trees and plants built up over the years are protected and made a central part of any future plans, and ultimately Fernhill should become a world class park for South Dublin.
"The back fields could be converted into much needed playing fields; a playground could be installed; the House itself could become a super cafe; there is scope for a garden school and the existing planted areas would allow for excellent walking routes."
