Irish Water To Carry Out Work In Castleisland

Irish Water has announced an investment of €250,000 to upgrade the water infrastructure in Castleisland, Co Kerry.

It is understood the work will involve replacing old asbestos, cast iron and lead water pipes.

The asbestos cement pipes were laid in the 1970s and there have been frequent disruptions in the supply due to burst mains. The existing cast iron pipes were laid in the 1930s and are severely corroded. As a result, they are difficult to maintain. Furthermore, lead services pipes connecting to individual customers are also to be replaced.


In total, the project will see 700 metres of old pipes replaces with a 160mm uPVC watermain on Main Street. The works will be undertaken by Kerry County Council's labour crews and are expected to begin in February or March 2017 and last for eight to 10 weeks.
