Govt Slammed For Doing 'Bare Minimum' To Protect Moore Street

Sinn Féin has hit out at the Government for doing the "bare minimum" to help protect Moore Street in Dublin.

Spokesperson for Heritage Sandra McLellan said it is "insulting" to the memories of those who fought and died to strive for a united Ireland.

She said: "Moore Street, the surrounding areas, the history, the last outpost, the People's Republic. All to be thrown on the scrap heap like used up unwanted junk, cast aside with scant regard of what the area means to the people of Dublin and this Island as a whole. This is an injustice that highlights this government's attitude towards the history and the formation of this nation. Maybe it is ashamed?


"It is disrespectful to those who gave us the freedom that we take for granted today. They planted the seeds for a fair and just Ireland. That's what they envisaged.

"This Government have done the bare minimum. They have once again favoured the developers, favoured those who will line their pockets at the expense of picking the pockets of our heritage, all under the watchful eye of this government.

"The preservation and restoration of the entire terrace would enable it to be transformed into a historical quarter and battlefield site."
