Rise In Households Paying Water Charges

Over 50% of Irish Water customers have paid water charges at the end of the second cycle compared to 44% at the end of the first cycle.

745,000 households paid during the second billing cycle, compared to 675,000 in the first.

Irish Water has today confirmed that 55% of customers had paid water charges at the end of the second bill cycle compared to 44% at the end of the first cycle. There has been a 24% increase in revenue between the two billing periods.


In total 830,000 households have now paid part or all of their bills.

Elizabeth Arnett, Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs with Irish Water, said: "With all utilities, a proportion of customers miss paying a bill, so the propensity of those who have paid to continue paying seems very strong. More than 150,000 additional households who had not made any payment during the first billing cycle began to pay water charges during the second billing cycle with many paying both bills together. Total payments received during the second billing cycle are 24% higher than during the first billing cycle. €30m was paid in cycle 1, €38.4m in cycle 2, giving a total of €68.4m received to date.

"Over 230,000 customer have signed up to online account management and this is increasing all the time."
