Over 10,000 People On Housing Waiting List For More Than Four Years

Over 10,000 people have been on Dublin City Council's housing list for more than four years, it has been revealed.

Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Daithí Doolan said he was "shocked" at the 10,303 people waiting on the housing list, adding that the council has effectively abandoned responsibility to the private sector.

Mr Doolan said: "According to the Housing Agency, a minimum of 37,700 housing units, social and private will be required over the next 5 years of which 2 to 3,000 per annum would be expected to be delivered within the Dublin City Council administrative area to achieve overall targets.


"But only 3,917 new council homes were built by Dublin City Council since 2000. That equals less than 300 homes built each year. This is a drop in the ocean of what is needed. The council has effectively abandoned responsibility to the private sector. This has only deepened the crisis.

"The figures demand immediate action by Dublin City Council and the Department of Environment."
