Many older houses (and some newer ones too) have bathrooms that are only 5 x 8. So in order to use that space wisely you need to install sanitary ware that is smaller in scale. For example, installing a modern but smaller-size pedestal sink will save space. The same applies to the toilet; if possible, install a close to wall toilet and cistern.
